Just after the first of the year, Baby "C" came in to this world! He is a sweet little guy that is loved by an adorable 2 year old sister. It was so nice to spend time with this great family as they adjust to life as a family of four!

Christmas has come and gone but I have a few pictures I'd love to share! The kids were so excited and believed in the magic (hard not to at 2 and 4 years old!).

We visited Mr. and Mrs. Claus about a week before Christmas and there were NO tears! Ella kept saying "Santa.... Scarrrrrrry", but when it came time to sit on his lap she high tailed it to "Mommy Santa" and was quite happy!

It is tradition in my family that "The Night Before Christmas" is read to the children on Christmas Eve by the Grandfather (a.k.a. "Pa"). I remember doing this with my Grandpa (up until he passed in my late twenties!) and love the memories we created! This was my book as a child and I hope that my kids continue the tradition! (Ella got distracted half way through and moved to a chair across the room!)

Derek has two emergency room visits under his belt before the age of 5. This time he was pushed off a pretty high trampoline and broke his wrist (the first was when he slipped a few months ago and hit his head on a bench. He ended up with 4 staples in his head that time). It was really traumatic for him as he had to be admitted to the hospital and had surgery to repair the broken bones.

At first sight of his hand, I immediately knew I had to get to the hospital. He was screaming in pain and kept saying "I can't move my hand"- which made me numb with fear. I left Ella at the house we were at and drove him to the hospital myself (not quite sure how I did that).

We were immediately given an ER room and he was quickly drugged up on morphine. One side effect that we were unaware of from the drug, is that it can cause itchiness. So for the next 12 hours, I stood by his bedside and scratched his face, nose and many other body parts as he screamed out. He couldn't itch anything himself as he had one broken arm and the other was tethered up with an IV. Not fun.

The next morning he was taken away screaming down the hall in to surgery (a mother's worst nightmare) and came out of surgery with 2 pins holding the bones together.
He's been on the mend ever since. A week after surgery, he went back to the doctor to have a hard cast put on. He chose his favorite color red and loved that he could ask people to sign it.

5 days after the cast was put on, I was taking his jammies off in the morning and as I slid the arm of the shirt off his arm I felt the cast slide down with it. So back to the doctor we went and he ended up being re-casted. This time he is now sporting a very pretty light blue cast.

He has about 2 more weeks (hopefully) left in the hard cast and then he will have the pins removed and will be placed in a brace. We are crossing our fingers that he has no long term conditions resulting from this injury and that it will be a good story to tell when he is older.

Our baby girl turned two the beginning of this month.... where did the time go!?!? She has gotten so much hair this last year, has become Miss Independent (her favorite saying is "I do"), is interested in the potty, started preschool, sings and dances along to Justin Bieber and can throw a tantrum like no other 2 year old.
There is no middle ground for Ella- she is either totally happy, funny and fun to be around or TOTALLY not. But either way, we love her to pieces and are so thankful to have her as a part of our family.

At the last minute, we decided to drive up to Sacramento and take in the State Fair. It was a blast! So much to do and see- but the highlights were the pony rides and cotton candy!

When Ella saw that Derek was going to do this, she wanted to as well... She stood in line, waited her turn patiently and as soon as it was her turn- she began screaming and kicking wildly. Needless to say, she just watched on as Derek jumped around!

Notice the red smudges all over her face from the yummy red icee!?!?!

Good Ol' Tex.... she could have ridden the ponies all night.

One of the last few rides of the night... a ride from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch.

In early July, our family flew to Hawaii to celebrate my Mom's birthday. It was the kids' first time and they were SO excited! I was so nervous to fly with Ella- as she can be a bit unpredictable, but she honestly did awesome! We stayed at in Villages at Mauna Lani in this condo; it was perfect for our large group and we would definitely go back again!
We played at the beach and pool, enjoyed a Luau, took in the sites and ate many great meals. We were there over the 4th of July (our third 4th in Hawaii!), so it was fun to see the fireworks!
Notice how Ella is sitting on a towel? She never got over her dislike of the sand... kind of hard to avoid on an ISLAND!!!

Derek throughly enjoyed playing on the beach. He collected rocks, played in the water and even caught a fish!

There is nothing better than eating a hot dog poolside on the 4th of July!

The community pool at the condo had a perfect kids pool that they could stand in and play. It was PERFECT!

Love how you can see the crescent moon...

Since Ella didn't enjoy the sand, she found a better past time.... playing in the shower! This kept her busy for quite a while!

As a surprise for my Mom, I hired a photographer to take our family photo (all 8 of us!) on the beach. I'm just waiting to see them and will definitely post when get them! Can't wait!

Two of my best friends from college and I all had baby girls within 6 months of each other. They are now 2, 22 months (Ella) and 19 months old and will hopefully have the special friendships that I share with their mother's!
There are other children in group ranging from 4 1/2 (Derek) down to 7 months old and we hope to have them all married off to each other as time marches on!
This past week, one of them visited from San Diego and we got to do a mini photo shoot! Our hearts were full as we watched our little girls stand there smiling and holding hands.

I met up with a great family today at Hap Magee Park to capture some fun family portraits. Toward the end of the session, Mom and Dad pulled out "D's" beloved Tonka Truck. They began telling me how he drives it around the park, along the paths with such determination.... and they weren't exaggerating!
A look of seriousness came over "D" as he began to push his truck around the park; he was a man on a mission. Even when we had to turn him around he began to protest in the thought that he might have to stop. It was the cutest. thing. ever.

Which do you like better... color or black and white? I love them both for this one, but I think the black and white is best!

Grandma, a.k.a. "Nini" bought the girl's dresses while on vacation and they then decided they needed a "generations" picture! Great idea- and something I need to do with the women in my own family!
Although it is almost July in California, it rained yesterday (with thunderstorms!) and today was cloudy and cool. Not the type of weather you want when you are wearing these sweet summer dresses, but adorable regardless!
Between shots, the girls were bundled up in blankets, snacking on Cheerios and were being real troopers. Despite the less than ideal conditions, we got some great captures.

We traveled down to San Diego in April for a visit to Legoland and the many other fun things to do down there! It was Ella's first plane ride and she shockingly did great! BUT the flight is only an hour (and Mommy had pounds of candy for bribes!)!
We "did" Legoland two days, played at the beach with my best friend and her daughter, visited the animals at San Diego Zoo, played in the pool, spent time with my brother and his girlfriend who live down there and my parents met us on the tail end of the trip too! Busy, busy!
Here are some pics from our beach day... Ella HATED the sand for most of the day. She didn't want it on her feet, didn't want to sit on it and didn't want it touching her AT. ALL.- kind of hard to do at the beach! ;) But by the end of the day, she started exploring and began to enjoy it!

This past weekend, my kids received a fabulous idea for a party gift... DIY Chalk Paint! We mixed some of the concoction together today and got to work on the driveway. Ella REALLY got in to it!

I feel like I haven't been posting! I've actually been REALLY busy editing two BIG school functions- neither of which I have model releases for so I can't share pictures!
But I'd like to get some personal photos back up here! Here is a quick recap of our past Easter...

Dying eggs was a big hit. Ella didn't understand the concept of "gently lowering them in to the water", so she just kind of threw them in there and the colored water went everywhere. Derek was very serious about getting them all just the right color!

Ella and Derek had a blast looking for eggs in our backyard on Easter. To the Easter Bunny's surprise, when "he" was hiding all the eggs outside early in the morning (and the Easter Bunny is not a "morning bunny" let me tell you) it was raining! Plus we are re-doing our backyard, so they were hidden all over the dirty construction site! Ella liked finding the eggs so much, that when they were all uncovered she kept saying "more, more". So Kai kept taking the ones from her basket when she wasn't looking and throwing them back out in the yard to find!

Ella would not sit with her brother to take a picture, so I got to be in it! Well, at least there is photographic evidence that I do exist in this family!

These parents are so blessed to have little "M" in their lives! She is one of the strongest newborns I've photographed and had the most incredible blonde little eyelashes!
I have to say that newborn sessions are truly my favorite to be a part of. They are the longest and probably "hardest" to do, but result in the most incredible photos of a time that passes so quickly!

We all know how often Mom isn’t in photos with her children since it always seems she is the one taking photos of the kids! Just like us, babies have their good and bad days. Baby "J" is no different. The first time I visited him to do his newborn portraits he just wasn't having it! I got a few cute photos, but he just didn't want to be moved and only wanted Mom to hold him! So I went back today to try to get a few more and he slept like a champ! Zonked out, happy as can be! Sweet Baby "J" is just over 2 weeks old and is simply adorable! Congratulations!

When I first started posing this little guy for his photographs, he did not want his arms moved at all! He kept tucking them in tight to his body but after his second feeding he was putty in my hands! Baby "R" is absolutely precious and looks exactly like big brother! Congratulations!

Ella's First Haircut! | Jenn Hoffmann Photography, East Bay

Ella had starting to grow a mullet in the back, as well as the front. Is that even possible? The kid has barely any hair on the sides of her head! So we made an appointment with Sheila at Shear Adventures in Danville for her first haircut!
Here is her "before"-

Knowing my child and shall we say her "spunkiness", I prepared for the worst. I KNEW she was going to fight it the whole way, kicking and screaming! So I brought every candy imaginable to keep her occupied, along with several other distractions.

I would have bet my life on it.... and I would have lost. She enjoyed EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. of it! If she could talk, I think she would have exclaimed "Finally!" as I put her in the chair! She sat there smiling, playing with the toys and looked around at the other children as if to say, "Hey, look at me! I am big enough for a haircut now"!!!! I know I say it all the time- but she really does want to do EVERYTHING her big brother does.

Candy, toys and a pretty bow- what more could a little girl ask for!?!?! This is actually where our one and only problem arose... she didn't want to get out of the chair. I tried to take her out once and she threw a fit, so Sheila let her stay there while Derek got his hair cut in the chair next to her.

Yep, we are still sportin' the "Pretty Smile"!!!

And here are the "after" shots! How cute does she look!?!?! And isn't the back adorable too? No more straggly mullet! Sheila's the BEST!!!

We took Derek to Monster Jam as a birthday present. He was over the moon when he found out that he was going to see the trucks "for real"!!! It was a FREEZING night, but we were just glad it didn't rain! We went to the "pit party" first where you get to meet the drivers and see the trucks up close. He was disappointed his favorite "Blue Thunder" wasn't there, but his mood quickly picked up with some cotton candy and a gravedigger hat!
I have to say that this "sport" would be very easy to get in to! Kai and I found ourselves cheering the trucks on as they raced around the track and overturned during their "freestyle" event! Derek wanted them to crash more than they did- that was all he really cared about!

I just packaged up a set of three canvas wraps for a client; these are going to look fantastic clustered on her wall together! The largest one is 16x20, the one on the left is 11x14 and the one on the right is a custom size 8x14. They also have a 24x24 canvas of the family coming! I can't wait to see it!

When most clients think about wall prints, they think the 11x14 size is going to look BIG! But in all reality, it isn't. It works perfectly here as a compliment to the other photos, but in no way would it fill the wall just by itself! So when you are thinking of how to arrange your memories on your wall or mantle, don't be afraid to go big (16x20 and larger!) or group several smaller prints together!

My clients receive a link to a "Wall Display Idea" slideshow after their session to help visualize how to arrange the photos! And I am always here to help with size suggestions, etc.!

I came across this read not too long ago and I think it really helps to put the whole "what size should I order" struggle in perspective- Bigger Really IS Better!

Currently I am working on a new marketing publication and would like to feature a local family! I am looking for a fun, enthusiastic family that has a story (of ANY kind) to tell- who would like the opportunity to be interviewed and photographed by me!

Please send me an email with a short description of your family and why you would like to be chosen (please include a current photograph of your family). If you are chosen, you will receive a FREE on location session with me, plus a FREE 8x10 print- as well as being featured in my publication! There is no obligation to purchase anything!!!

Casting Call Requirements:
- A contract AND model release must be signed
- Parents and children must be willing to have first and last names used in publication (to be distributed locally and online)- OR first names and last initial
- Must be 3-5 family members only
- Children must be between the ages of 6 months (sitting up on their own) to 8 years
- Must be willing to travel to a pre-determined location in Livermore
- Session to take place on March 22nd, 2011 at 6pm
- New and current clients welcome to enter a submission

You are also welcome to submit an entry on behalf of a family you know that you believe is deserving (as long as you have their persmission!) Using these candy hearts was the only way I could get her to sit still long enough to get a few pictures!

I told her "No more candy". Fyi... she has about 7 or 8 of the conversation hearts in her mouth already!

And Derek has never been more cooperative for a photo shoot as he was for this one... Look at the poses he came up with all by himself! Meet Mr. Joe Cool......
